Maimane thanks MMC and urges them to continue working.

Maimane says he wants Mashaba to finish his term.

"I respect Herman Mashaba's decision." The DA leader said.

Federal chair Helen Zille is currently at Primedia Place at 702 chatting to Eusebius McKaiser...

"There can be no doubt that Joburg is better than it was under the ANC." Maimane said.

"Today is a difficult day," Maimane says.

DA leader Mmusi Maimane now briefs the media...

"Thank you for giving me this honour to serve Joburg. Thank you ntate Maimane."

Mashaba thanks coalition partners including the EFF. He also thanks Joburg residents.

Mashaba says it was tough being Joburg mayor.

Mashaba said he's due to reopen 30 November.

Mashaba now reads out his accomplishments as mayor.

Mashaba says he will leave office on October 27, 2019.

"It's for this reason that I resign as DA member." Mashaba said.

"I am gravely concerned the DA I signed up to is not that emerged from this past weekend," Mashaba said.

Mashaba says he's not happy with Zille being elected as federal chair.

Mashaba has now started...

Herman knows very well that I was hiding uMkhonto We Sizwe operatives in my house when he was a businessman making many billions out of hair straighteners and things.

Helen Zille said.

EWN asked Zille what she made of Mashaba’s comment that he would resign if right-wing elements took over the party.

Zille hit out at the Joburg mayor saying she contributed to the fight against apartheid while Mashaba was busy making money through hair products.

After new Federal Council chair Helen Zille was announced as the new Fedex chair, Mashaba announced he would hold a media briefing at 10 am on Monday.

A senior leader told EWN Mashaba “stubborn like that” and had already made his decision.

EWN understands that senior DA leaders including Mmusi Maimane spent most of Sunday night trying to convince Mashaba to stay, but they failed.

Last week, Mashaba told 702 ahead of the Federal Council meeting that he would resign if the party would be taken over by what he called right-wing elements.

Senior DA members told Eyewitness News that Mashaba was expected to resign from the party.

So what do we know so far?

God morning and welcome to EWN's live blog about Johannesburg Mayor and DA member Herman Mashaba's resignation...
