LIVE BLOG: Ramaphosa announces a move to COVID-19 lockdown level 1 from Sunday

President Cyril Ramaphosa will address South Africans on Wednesday night on developments in the country's response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ramaphosa says let's all take up the Jerusalem dance challenge on Heritage Day. Yasss!

"We must wear a mask when we are in public and it must cover the mouth and the nose." The president urges.
He further states that people must socially distance, sanitize their hands.

"We can't afford a second wave of infections... It's up to all of us to take precautions." Ramaphosa says.

He says the details of those investigations will be made available to the public soon.

The president says there is progress in COVID-19 related corruption investigations. 

Ramaphosa: We are increasing support for gender-based violence survivors.

IN CASE YOU MISSED THE BREAKING NEWS: SA will move to lockdown level 1 from Sunday at midnight.

Ramaphosa urges all businesses affected by COVID-19 to apply for funding or financial help.

Ramaphosa: The move to alert level 1 helps economic activity to return. 

The president has extended the curfew to 00:00 [midnight]. He also says alcohol can be sold until 19:00.

"We'll gradually ease opening of borders from 1 October 2020." Ramaphosa says.

Spectators are still not allowed at sporting events, the president states.

Ramaphosa: The number of people attending funerals can increase to 100.

The president says gatherings can increase to 200 people. Mask wearing is still a must.

He says after many consultations with various stakeholders Cabinet decided we are moving to level 1

Ramaphosa says we have made progress in terms of fighting COVID-19.

Ramaphosa: I want to make a call to everyone who has a smart phone in South Africa to download the COVID app. The app will alert any user if they have been in contact with anyone who tested positive for COVID-19.

Last week, the president told the SA National Editors' Forum that government was considering a further relaxation of some of the lockdown regulations, which means the country could go to level 1.

Ramaphosa met with the National Coronavirus Command Council on Monday where it's believed that a further relaxation of lockdown was discussed.

In this much anticipated briefing, Ramaphosa is likely to announce a move to level 1 national lockdown.
