LIVE BLOG: Western Cape records highest number of cops infected with coronavirus

Police Minister, Bheki Cele holds a virtual media briefing to give an update on the level of compliance and adherence to the COVID19 lockdown regulations in the country.

Cele says the ban on alcohol has more to do with ensuring there are enough beds in hospitals to treat coronavirus patients and minimise trauma admissions related to alcohol, than prohibiting it.

Cele says as restrictions on movement lift, there will be fewer roadblocks.

Cele reminds the public that lockdown is to protect the country.

121 stations countrywide where members have tested positive. Western Cape hardest hit with 19 stations have had to be decontaminated twice or more.

Hundreds of police and over 3,000 were quarantined. He sends condolences of six members (4 in WC) who have died as a result of COVID-19. 

Cele pays respects to security forces in the front lines right now. Over 600 members of the police have tested positive for coronavirus. 109 have recorded. The Western Cape has the most positive cases among Saps.

More gender-based violence distressed calls have come through to the command centre during lockdown.

2 major drug busts last week. R4million worth of drugs confiscated in Eastern Cape. In Western Cape, a drug bust worth R30million.

4 suspects linked to 18 hijackings arrested.

4,431 fewer cases of rape recorded during March 2020 compared to 2019.
1,439 fewer cases of attempted murder.
4 cash-in-transit heists committed in March 2020 compared to 26 in 2019.

Liquor and tobacco smuggling with neighbouring countries has also increased.

Cele says authorities have visited a number of provinces where high incidents of non-compliance were observed. These provinces happen to be the ones with the highest coronavirus positive cases.  107,000 cases of lockdown regulations were recorded at the end of April, towards the end of May, that numbers have almost doubled and is now at over 200,000.
