Known to millions as 'Ayashisa Mateki’, he carried the number 13 with pride and led Orlando Pirates to unforgettable victories over the years.
While he continues to follow the game, Mahlangu says there is nothing quite like being on the pitch.
“What I miss about the game is the environment, to go to the stadium and see the people cheering for you.”

He says he is proud to see how far the Buccaneers have come and hopes the glory remains after the departure of head coach Jose Riveiro.
“It’s sad that the coach will be leaving the team… Since the coach came to Orlando Pirates, we are laughing, we are a happy nation. What I like about the coach is that he's got that thing of giving the youngsters a chance to play.”

He says that it will be important for Pirates to appoint a new coach who understands the culture of the team.
“It’s not easy to play for Pirates… for me losing the coach is going to pull down the way the team is playing.”
