DURBAN - Parliament’s police portfolio committee said the killing of a presidential bodyguard in KwaZulu-Natal pointed to an onslaught on officers.

On Tuesday night, the sergeant attached to the VIP protection unit was shot during a suspected robbery in Inanda.

The criminals attacked him outside a shop and stole his work firearm.

Committee chairperson, Ian Cameron, said this was extremely concerning.

"Whether private security or police, there is an onslaught on lawfully armed persons, especially those in their official capacity. They are very often disarmed and killed in order to get their official firearm and in this specific case, state firearm. It is obviously extremely concerning."

Cameron has cautioned service members to stay vigilant.

"One must also caution the relevant persons who may be at risk with regard to this to be extremely vigilant. I think we should understand that the onslaught from violent criminals in South Africa is a significant threat."
