JOHANNESBURG - Joburg Water has urged residents to use water sparingly as areas in the south of the city experience shortages.

The low levels of water supply are caused by an outage at the Eikenhof pump station.

Joburg Water said the city's power substation in the area was struck by lighting on Friday.

It said while water pumping has resumed, it will take some time for reservoir levels to recover as a result of high-water consumption in the metro.

Areas including Soweto, Brixton and parts of the Joburg CBD may experience low water pressure.

The outage at Eikenhof has also affected Rand Water's booster station that feeds some of the city's reservoirs.

Last week, the utility warned of high water consumption in the province that left some areas - including Soweto - with dry taps.

Joburg Water said it would monitor the system and provide roaming tankers where necessary.

Meanwhile, City Power has not given a restoration time for electricity in the area.
