Africa Melane (standing in for CapeTalk's John Maytham) speaks to Director of Gun Control SA, Stanley Maphosa.

Listen below:

"South Africa is in the grip of a gun violence crisis... beyond just the mass shootings, according to the latest SAPS report, about 33 people are shot and killed every day."
- Stanley Maphosa, Director of Gun Control SA

Maphosa explains that many of the guns used in shootings every day in South Africa are illegal - and end up in the hands of criminals due to negligence and theft.

"They were lost and stolen - some from the police, civilians, the private sector, security..."
- Stanley Maphosa, Director of Gun Control SA

Maphosa says firearms are the first things that burglars look for in the homes they steal from, so it's essential that gun owners are compliant with the laws.

He also says it's essential that there's proper oversight of the laws and that those who are negligent face serious consequences.
