Two separate incidents involving German high school students have sparked outrage after reports of neo-Nazi gestures and nationalist chanting at Holocaust memorial sites.
At the Bergen-Belsen memorial, a group of students from a school in Bielefeld, aged 14 and 15, were heard chanting 'Germany for the Germans! Foreigners out!'
Headmaster Joachim Held confirmed that the students had been disciplined, though they were not expelled.
In a separate incident at Auschwitz, four students from Scultetus High School in Görlitz were photographed making the 'OK' hand gesture – commonly recognised as a neo-Nazi symbol in far-right circles.
The photo, taken in March, surfaced recently after being posted on one student’s Instagram account.
A spokesperson for the Görlitz school said the students have faced disciplinary action and are now required to participate in a workshop focused on supporting individuals with disabilities.
"They absolutely knew what they were doing, but did they know why they were doing it?"
