The anti-kidnapping task team found the victim safe and alive in Diepkloof, Soweto, and traced the group - including three Chinese nationals and two Mozambicans - to different locations in Johannesburg.
The authorities said they also found two firearms, including one that was stolen during a house robbery in Linden in 2023.
“Within 24 hours, our teams were able to rescue the kidnapped victim. They found him safe and alive,” said police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe.
“The SAPS has in recent weeks been able to intercept a number of kidnappers linked to syndicates who kidnap businessmen and demand large sums of ransom."
Mathe appealed to residents to assist police by playing an active role in combating crime.
"Communities are urged to continue to report suspicious activities in and around their neighbourhood to ensure together we deal decisively with these criminals."
