JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng has lobbied all parties in the legislature, except for the Democratic Alliance (DA), to help it pass the provincial budget.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Gauteng budget for the 2025/2026 financial year was tabled before the legislature.

The total budget for this year is R171.5 billion. This is a R2 billion increase from the previous year.

The ANC currently leads a minority coalition government in Gauteng.

This means it needs the support of other parties outside of its coalition to pass anything in the legislature.

ANC Gauteng MPL and Finance MEC Lebogang Maile said that engagements with leaders of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and ActionSA had been going well so far.

"I’m quite impressed, I must really express our gratitude that if we have that kind of leadership we will go somewhere because they are not giving us a blank cheque. They are saying you want us to pass your budget, these are the issues our constituencies are facing."

The DA in Gauteng said it wasn’t approached by the ANC and has criticised the budget, saying it would plunge the province into a financial crisis.
