What happens when they’re out?

South Africans are fairly well acclimatised to traffic lights failing but that doesn’t mean we like it. Generally, motorists treat intersections as four-way-stops but often impatience and irritation wins over, boiling into road rage and resulting in accidents.

It’s up to the Johannesburg Metro Police Department and the pointspeople to step in and manage the intersections. However, there are just not enough metro cops to be everywhere all the time and JMPD admits this.
