MTHATHA - The family of a young man who was shot and killed at the Walter Sisulu University’s Mthatha campus has identified his body at the local mortuary in the Eastern Cape.

Sisonke Mbolekwa was allegedly killed by a residence manager at the institution, who reportedly shot at students who pelted rocks at his on-campus residence while protesting.

The university claims it has no records of him being a student at the institution, but the victim’s family insists he was enrolled as an education student.

And while there are conflicting reports about whether Mbolekwa was a student at the campus, his family says they are devastated about his passing.

After getting a report at the hospital where he died, the family visited the residence in question on campus.

Family spokesperson Ncedo Kolanisi said, “The university was being malicious because these are the very same people led by Irene who went and visited the family yesterday, and did say to the mother of the student that he is indeed a student.”

The family said it wants accountability on the brutal murder of their child, calling for the immediate arrest of the perpetrator.
