JOHANNESBURG - Minister of Electricity Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said the increase of electricity tariffs in parts of the country is unsustainable and unfair to customers.
Johannesburg residents have had to dig deeper into their pockets to keep the lights on, after a 12.7% tariff hike and City Power’s R200 surcharge monthly fee.

Ramokgopa said there’s an urgent need to address the root issue leading to the increases.
“As Eskom applies for these tariff increases, municipalities on the back of that add a surcharge. The cost of doing business is increasing.
“People are going to find it difficult to afford food, as they do now. Many are having a similar problem, and that problem is likely to become acute over a period of time.”
