JOHANNESBURG - The Alliance of Citizens for Change (ACC) has scored the top spot on the national ballot at the upcoming general elections.
The ACC - led by former Democratic Alliance member Masizole Mnqasela - is contesting the elections for the first since its formation last year.
The order of how the 52 political parties contesting the national elections will appear on the elections ballot was decided by the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) at a draw in Midrand on Thursday.
The ballot paper at the May 29 polls will be the longest since the dawn of democracy.
This means 52 parties will be competing for the electorate’s attention and vote.
Political parties contesting the watershed elections think being at the top of the list could mean top of mind when the electorate is faced with a tough choice at the polls.
Earlier – IEC chief electoral officer Sy Mamabolo erroneously drew an independent for the top spot on the ballot.
“When we err, we err in public and we have to apologise. My left hand picks up as all the time. This one reads ‘Alliance of Citizens for Change.’”
After the ACC - the remaining parties will be ranked in alphabetical order.
