New coalition brings Lesotho a step closer to a new PM

The government of Lesotho has passed a constitutional amendment that makes provision for a prime minister to resign before the end of a five-year term. The amendment also strips the prime minister of powers to unilaterally dissolve parliament and call for elections when he loses a vote of no confidence. Senior citizens queuing for their monthly social grants at a South African Post Office in Vosloorus have called for government intervention to cut down the waiting time for payments on collection day. Some of the elderly waited for more than five hours to collect their grants.

After protests, food parcels handed out in Booysens informal settlement

Angry residents of Booysens informal settlement barricaded Eloff Street in the Joburg CBD with burning tyres and rocks for a second day on Wednesday morning. Under a heavy police presence, roads were cleared for motorists. An hour later, acting Gauteng MEC for Social Development Panyaza Lesufi arrived and calmed the situation by handing out food parcels. The informal settlement is home to about 3,000 people.

Owner arrested as expired meat found in Soweto butchery

WARNING: VIDEO NOT FOR SENSITIVE VIEWERS: Gauteng law enforcement officers led a COVID-19 lockdown joint operation in Soweto to enforce regulations and compliance. During the operations, expired meat products were found at a butchery near Bara taxi rank. The owner was arrested and the business closed.

Joburg mayor launches hand washing campaign

City of Johannesburg Major Geoffery Makhubo launched the Hlapa Matsoho hand-washing campaign at the Mangolongolo informal settlement, Ward 65, on 22 April 2020 to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the city. The campaign is aimed at educating communities and residents of Johannesburg, specifically in informal and depressed communities, about the importance of washing hands with soap.

Lockdown: Metro cop, security guard arrested for Vosloorus man’s killing

A metro police officer and security guard were on Monday arrested for the killing a 40-year-old man and for shooting at four children during the third day of the 21-day coronavirus lockdown. The Vosloorus victim's family says justice must be served, and the person who pulled the trigger has to be locked up for what he did.
