Hyundai's all-new Santa Fe Hybrid has arrived in South Africa.

The South Korean motor group describes this compact hybrid SUV as 'effortlessly blending electric and petrol power to deliver exceptional efficiency, while the regenerative braking system ensures intelligent energy use'.

While the boxy design has drawn mixed reaction worldwide, Melinda Ferguson says she loves the retro look of this 7-seater.

"I absolutely love the direction that Hyundai's going in terms of design; they are very in-your-face... There's been a lot of inspiration with this car I think from brands like Landrover... The front is quite Defender-esque; then you've got your back that looks quite Discovery."

The fourth generation Santa Fe features a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 44 kW electric motor.

"Combined, it produces 172 kW, and 367 N.m of torque, making it a much more powerful vehicle."

It delivers a combined fuel consumption figure of 7.5 L/100 km, according to Hyundai.

Ferguson found the Santa Fe easy to drive despite its size - 'I loved the smoothness'.

Other features she highlighted include a high-quality Bose sound system, generous legroom and boot space, as well as the car's H-shaped lights.

The Santa Fe sells for R 1 249 900, a price Ferguson considers reasonable, all told.

She gives the car an impressive 8.5 rating out of 10.
