CapeTalk's Lester Kiewit speaks to Brett Rogers of HaveYouHeard Marketing about a range of high-tech innovations regarding the humble braai.
Listen to the interview below:
One of the newer tech gadgets is the wireless Bluetooth meat thermometer, which texts you when your meat is done.
"It doesn't sound great because I like to be around my meat. I don't need to watch TV while my meat is cooking."
- Brett Rogers, HaveYouHeard Marketing
On a more serious note, Rogers says that the eco-friendly and alternative fuel braais available today are transforming the landscape by aiding in fuel conservation.
Smokeless, electric, and solar braais are game-changers for many South Africans living in apartments and complexes where open fires are not permitted on balconies.
While purists may argue that these aren't 'real braais' without the presence of smoke and fire, Rogers asserts that they should not be stigmatised, as they enable more South Africans to enjoy braais - whatever their level of expertise.
"You should be allowed to braai any way you wish."
- Brett Rogers, HaveYouHeard Marketing
He jokes that it should be our 'human right' to braai however we like.
"Some things are silly such as a wireless meat thermometer, but for those who may not be great at braaing, these new braais allow them to get in on the action."
- Brett Rogers, HaveYouHeard Marketing
Even the launch of braai apps such as Braaimaster provides great tips and serves as a platform for braai lovers to share pictures and advice.
It allows them to share their love for braaing, he adds.
Lester jokes and says South Africans don't need gadgets to determine when the meat is ready - a 'braaimaster' uses the tried and tested ritual of breaking off a piece of 'tjop' or half a wors and taste-testing it.
