Bitcoin reached a record high of $123,153.22 on Monday, surpassing $120,000,00 (R2 230 000) for the first time.

The world's largest cryptocurrency has surged by more than 30% this year, and more than 60% since Donald Trump's reelection as U.S president in November 2024.

On Monday the cryptocurrency worth jumped 3%, also recording a weekly gain of more than 12%.

Speaking to Stephen Grootes on The Money Show, Farzam Ehsani, founder of VALR says Bitcoin has surged in popularity in recent years as more people begin to better understand cryptocurrencies.

"Only in the last few years has there been a lot more clarity and understanding of what it is, and particularly regulatory clarity. That has been something that's been not just amiss, but there's actually been vehement against crypto assets for quite some time."

"There have been a lot of institutional investors coming in \to this space, particularly what are called Bitcoin treasury companies. And this is a phenomenon taking place in different parts of the world from the U.S to Japan, where you have companies whose explicit role is to just buy Bitcoin and hold it in the anticipation of the appreciation of this asset."

- Farzam Ehsani, founder - VALR

"We've seen the asset appreciate a lot. It's actually the best performing major asset in 2025..."
