Billions of rand of benefits are available to be claimed across the country.

Many people are not aware that they are entitled to these assets or payouts or forget to claim them.

It could also be the case that the beneficiary’s contact details are out of date or they passed on before telling their family about the money.

In addition to this, poor administration and record-keeping could be the reason someone has not claimed their money.

Liebenberg says the majority of these funds are in retirement or pension funds.

Some of these funds are continuing to accrue interest but not all are.

“It makes sense to claim your funds as soon as possible so you can turn those funds into something useful for yourself.”
- Erica Liebenberg, JustMoney spokesperson

If you want to find out if you are owed benefits, you can use tools like the Financial Sector Conduct Authority’s unclaimed benefit search tool.

You can also use the JSE’s claim it site if you have unclaimed benefits there.
