Spanish driver Carlos Sainz wins Dakar Rally for third time

Asked about defending his title next year Sainz said: 'It's too early to think about it, let me enjoy this.'

    Saudi Arabia is seeking to use glitzy sporting extravaganzas as an instrument of soft power in its push for regional supremacy as well as to project a moderate image of a country long seen as an exporter of jihadist ideology.

    The move has been an open secret with Fernando Alonso entering rallies in South Africa and Morocco as preparation with fellow Spaniard and former Dakar motorcycle winner Marc Coma as co-driver.
