Robots. Traffic lights. Signals. Call them what you like.
In South Africa they can be a source of massive frustration. It’s not unusual for you, the motorist, to find yourself crawling along major thoroughfares because the robots are flashing red, have lost power or are short-timing. With the frequency of loadshedding also now a factor, this means more and more intersections are out more often. This means more traffic and more anxiety.
Eyewitness News investigated the state of Johannesburg’s 2114 signalled traffic intersections and got to the bottom of what’s causing the lights to go out, what happens when they do, how are they getting fixed, how we can stop them going out and exploring some solutions for the future.
