Police in Mpumalanga have launched an investigation into the cause of a head-on collision between a sedan and a truck that left four women dead on the R23 between Volksrust and Perdekop on Friday.

According to authorities, four others in the sedan were injured, with injuries ranging from minor to serious, and they were transported to hospital.

The truck driver suffered minor injuries.

The province’s Department of Community Safety spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, has urged motorists to drive responsibly, especially on high-risk routes like the R23.

“Reckless and negligent driving cannot be ruled out, at this stage. The MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr Jackie Macie, is once again appealing to motorist to use the road with greater caution and always obey the rules.”
