The Bonteheuwel and Bishop Lavis communities are on high alert after an alleged gang leader was shot dead in the area.

Residents fear a retaliatory attack may soon be on the cards, causing a gang war in the area.

The 36-year-old man was shot dead near the corner of Jakkalsvlei Avenue and Valhalla Drive in Kalksteenfontein on Thursday.

Police Spokesperson FC Van Wyk said that another man was wounded in the shooting.

" As they were driving, a blue Audi vehicle passed, and the occupants randomly started shooting at them."

Ward councillor Angus McKenzie said that safety and security agencies, including the army, are on standby.

"We have some strong, credible information from communities that has been passed on to our law enforcement agencies."

McKenzie urged the community to come forward with information to bring the shooters to book.
