Rea Vaya bus services have resumed on Wednesday morning, a day after disruptions.
Operations were halted on Tuesday because the City of Johannesburg delayed payments to Piotrans and Letsamaiso, which run Rea Vaya.
The companies are responsible for servicing the buses, paying staff salaries, and footing the fuel bill.
Commuters using the key routes from Soweto to the Johannesburg CBD and Braamfontein were able to access buses in the morning.
It’s a familiar midweek scene in the Johannesburg CBD on Wednesday morning, with commuters streaming back into bus stations and taxi ranks.
There’s a noticeable buzz in the air, as people move with purpose, some heading to work, others to school - all trying to make up for lost time after Tuesday’s interruptions.
Buses are filling up quickly at major nodes, with long but steady queues as operations appear to be running smoothly.
For many, it’s a relief to see services restored, even as some remain cautious about possible future disruptions.
“A taxi is not the same as Rea Vaya. Nicest thing about Rea Vaya is that it has its own BRT lane, so you are able to make it to work on time.”
The city has confirmed no major disruptions are expected on Wednesday.
POOR COMMUNICATION CONCERNS
Rea Vaya commuters travelling between Soweto, Braamfontein and the Johannesburg CBD are concerned about the bus service's poor communication after disruptions.
While operations have resumed, many say the lack of timely updates left them stranded.
Some commuters say they only learned about the suspension after arriving at bus stations with no prior notice.
The disruption affected several key routes, with people forced to rely on taxis - a more expensive and time-consuming option.
Others said they only received clarity late Tuesday night through social media, raising concerns about transparency.
“And only later yesterday night, you know, when I checked, then there was a social media post saying, um, buses will resume again today with no explanation of what exactly transpired. I think they should have been transparent.”
Commuters are now calling on Rea Vaya and the city to improve communication.
