National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola said the disbanding of the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN)-based Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) was mainly aimed at preventing cartel investigations in Gauteng.
Masemola added that there was a clear link between the disbandment and the arrest of alleged underworld figure Katiso “KT” Molefe and the raid at Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s property.
However, Masemola would not comment on whether suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu was involved with crime cartels, saying investigations are still ongoing.
Masemola concluded his evidence before the Parliament ad hoc committee investigating police corruption on Tuesday.
He returned to Parliament to share his closing submission and respond to allegations against him before the committee.
Masemola was also questioned about the PKTT and how he opposed its immediate disbandment.
He said the disbandment was not about KZN political killing investigations but more about Gauteng investigations involving cartels.
“That’s when you realise that this group of people looks like their aim is to prevent the investigation of the Gauteng cases. Reason being that if you look at those letters of Shadrack Sibiya, he ordered dockets from KZN.”
Masemola denied receiving payments from Matlala, but he did admit to attending parties at suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya’s house a few times.
