The City of Cape Town has launched a R400 million recycling hub.

The Coastal Park Material Recovery Facility in Muizenberg is set to receive recyclables, glass, paper and plastic waste to process for resale.

The initiative forms part of the city's long-term to extend the lifespan of its landfills.

The recycling facility is currently receiving 25 tonnes of recyclable cardboard, glass metals and other waste materials.

At peak operating capacity, it is expected to receive 65 tonnes and grow its workforce from 80 to 160 jobs.

The city said its plan to prolong the lifespan of landfills will not only improve waste management but also reduce public spending on landfills.

Residents are urged to continue separating their recyclable materials and make use of available recycling services and drop-off facilities.

According to the city, a cleaner and more sustainable environment will benefit all residents.
