Build One South Africa (BOSA) leader Mmusi Maimane is calling for increased and targeted funding for the police stations in Cape Town, as violent crime escalates.
Over 40 people have allegedly been killed in gang-related shootings in the past week alone, sparking renewed calls for urgent government intervention.
On Tuesday, Maimane visited the Nyanga and Delft police stations in Cape Town to assess their operational capabilities, amid growing concerns of severe under-resourcing.
Officers at Nyanga police station complained about the shortage of vehicles and other equipment, while gang violence tightens its grip on parts of the city.
Maimane said communities are paying the price for a policing system stretched beyond capacity.
He argues that targeted investment, not empty promises, is needed to stabilise high-crime areas.
"Our proportion as far as budgeting for police is concerned is less than what it should be. So, there's a poor resourcing of the number of police. Even the number of detectives, you find that there's less and less of them, as a ratio of what they should be."
He warns that without decisive action, public trust in law enforcement will continue to erode.
