The Democratic Alliance (DA) has raised the alarm on the mushrooming of informal settlements in Gauteng, saying it requires legislative intervention.

Party spokesperson on Human Settlements, Luyolo Mphiti, said there needed to be a review of laws by the legislature.

Mphiti said the current Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act (PIE Act) states that no one may be evicted without a court order, even if they are living on land illegally.

He added that many residents in Gauteng were struggling as the rapid growth of informal settlements put a strain on land, infrastructure, and basic services.

"We will be conducting an oversight visit to areas that have been affected by land invasions to highlight the urgent need for reform as it relates to the PIE Act," Mphiti said.
