The Gauteng Department of Health has revised the death toll following a fatal scholar transport accident in Vanderbijilpark on Monday.
The department said its verified information confirms that 12 children lost their lives in the crash and not 14, as widely reported.
On Monday, a minibus taxi carrying learners to school collided with a truck in Vanderbijlpark.
Police investigations into the cause of the crash continue, with both drivers still under scrutiny and no arrests made at this stage.
Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko said as of Tuesday morning, Sebokeng Hospital has three learners admitted in the intensive care unit.
She said a fourth learner was airlifted to a private hospital in Alberton on Monday night.
“While moments of crisis can often lead to speculation, the spread of unconfirmed figures and misinformation is causing unnecessary harm. Such inaccuracies fuel confusion at a sensitive time and divert attention from the critical work of supporting affected families and providing medical care to survivors.”
