Seven killed in Cape Flats mass shooting

Seven people have been killed in a mass shooting at the Marikana informal settlement in Philippi on the Cape Flats.

According to police, preliminary investigations suggest the incident which occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning may be extortion-related.

In a statement, the South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed an investigation into the attack which claimed the lives of seven people: one woman and six men aged between 30 and 50.

Three people were also wounded in the attack, which occurred shortly after midnight.

"The suspects fled the scene, and no arrests have been made," police said, adding that a manhunt had been launched and investigations were ongoing.
