The head of Crime Intelligence, Dumisani Khumalo, will take the hot seat on Thursday when Parliament’s ad hoc committee continues its hearings into allegations of police corruption and interference.
Khumalo is expected to give testimony for the next two days and will take members of Parliament (MPs) through evidence involving allegations of sabotage and interference, as well as Minister Senzo Mchunu's decision to disband the political killings task team (PKTT), which was headed by Khumalo.
His testimony follows that of former Acting National Commissioner Khomotso Phahlane on Wednesday, who told MPs about a plot to have him removed as well as political interference and rogue units within the criminal justice system.
Khumalo has already made two appearances before the Madlanga Commission, where he told commissioners about efforts to derail certain investigations involving the criminal underworld.
He also testified about unlawful appointment of officials, a matter which led to his own arrest by the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) in June.
Khumalo also revealed details of the so-called “Big Five” organised crime syndicate that he said has infiltrated the police.
He also told the Madlanga Commission that he is in possession of evidence of various payments implicating Mchunu.
“In particular for the benefit of delegates for such events who are apparently linked to Minister Mchunu through the Chief of Staff Cedric Nkabinde in the office of the Minister," he added
Khumalo can also expect questions from the evidence leader on his relationship with KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and his arrest in 2025.
