How Imizamo Yethu's Silikamva High School achieved a 100% Matric pass rate

Silikamva High School, a no-fee school in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay (Cape Town), has achieved a 100% matric pass rate for the first time since opening in 2013.

"Since 2021, we have seen the results rising to 84%, 87%, 93%, 94%, and finally this year, 100%," says Deputy Principal George Gwazawafa.

He explains that the school’s leadership implemented predictable routines, a strong culture of discipline, and data-driven instruction to better understand and support each learner. 

"We created a different atmosphere altogether, and that allowed teachers to teach when they go to class. Before that, I remember I joined the school in 2019, when you got to class, 50% of your time was spent telling the kids keep quiet and pay attention.

"But right now, when you come into a class, or you go into a class, or a class comes to you, the first thing that they do is take out their books, and they are ready to learn. They are ready to listen to you. So, that allowed teachers to teach."

Looking ahead, Gwazawafa states that the school aims to maintain this standard while increasing the number of learners achieving bachelor-level passes.

"75% of our learners managed to attain a bachelor's pass. But as we know, just the process of applying itself is a huge challenge because of access to the internet, access to gadgets, responding to emails on time; it's a challenge. “

Support from partner organisations, he adds, helps students navigate bursary applications and access tertiary opportunities, giving them a clearer pathway despite South Africa’s challenging youth unemployment rates.
