Despite a withdrawal by the National Freedom Party (NFP) from the KwaZulu-Natal coalition, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) said that the Government of Provincial Unity (GPU) remains intact.

While the IFP insists there has been no formal withdrawal by the NFP,  last week the party’s Executive Committee announced that it was pulling out of the arrangement.

It later instructed its provincial chairperson who is also MEC for Social Development Mbali Shinga to resign from her post.

Shinga is yet to vacate office and has since faced internal disciplinary processes .

The IFP is the biggest beneficiary of the GPU with five members serving in the Provincial Executive Council, this includes the premier and four MECs.

And with the recent developments which have threatened the stability of the provincial government, the IFP said that it is still committed to seeing the partnership with the ANC, DA and NFP work out.

Party National Chairperson Blessed Gwala said, "At a time when communities are confronted by unemployment, failing infrastructure, crime and deteriorating public services, political instability is a luxury our province simply cannot afford.”

The party said that all members of the executive from the various parties are still continuing with their departmental duties.
