The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) said that it wants acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia to account before Parliament over the rollout of body-cameras for police officers.
Last year the ministry committed to the move, promising that some officers would have access to the equipment by April 2025.
The announcement was made by the then police minister Senzo Mchunu who has since he has been placed on special leave pending investigations of political interference within the SAPS.
DA NCOP member Mzamo Billy said, “I am actually writing to the chairperson of the Select Committee of Security and Justice today to demand that the minister be called urgently, where he will come and account, and tell us exactly what is happening, as far as the body cameras are concerned.”
Billy said that they want Cachalia to also take Parliament into confidence about the deadly shootouts in KwaZulu-Natal.
