Police in Bryanston have arrested a suspect in a major crackdown on hijacked buildings.
 
Joburg’s MMC for Public Safety and City Manager Floyd Brink conducted an operation at a hijacked mansion in the posh suburb on Thursday.
 
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts to address the crisis of hijacked buildings in the inner city and some affluent areas of the city.
  
The mansion on Grosvenor Road, in Bryanston, is believed to house more than 70 families living there unlawfully and paying rent to an alleged building hijacker.
 
During Thursday's raid, the suspect linked to the hijacking of the property was arrested. A firearm and live ammunition were also recovered.
 
Illegal electricity and water connections were identified and disconnected as part of restoring lawful control of the property.
 
Joburg’s Department of Public Safety said the crackdown underscores the city’s firm stance against property hijacking and related criminal activity. The department said that lawlessness will not be tolerated, adding that it vows to continue enforcement operations.
