The African National Congress (ANC) has hit out at its Government of National Unity (GNU) partner, the Freedom Front Plus, saying the party’s views on the situation in Venezuela are ill-informed and minimalistic.
The views come after FF Plus leader Corné Mulder criticized a statement released by the Department of International Relations (DIRCO) condemning the United States’ invasion of Venezuela and subsequent kidnapping of its president, Nicolás Maduro, on Saturday.
Posting on his X account, Mulder said DIRCO’s statement does not represent all parties in the GNU.
The post on his personal account stated that “the end of the socialist failure in Venezuela should be welcomed.”
His views were in direct opposition to those of the government, which condemned the actions of the USA.
The ANC’s first deputy secretary general, Nomvula Mokonyane, says it’s surprising there are parties in the GNU that advocate for the undermining of democracy.
“Their view is ill-informed, a view that is minimalistic and does not look at a better world but an issue about self-interest. Venezuela is a sovereign state, and the role of America against a sovereign state is not something you can easily say you don’t agree with the ANC on.” She added.
The ANC is expected to communicate its stance on the Venezuela situation on Tuesday, following a meeting of its national executive committee.
