The City of Cape Town’s Events Permit Office is currently reviewing an application from the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association (KKKA) to significantly alter the traditional Minstrel Parade route for 2026.
A SHIFT IN TRADITION
The KKKA has applied for the parade to bypass its historical route, which typically runs from the Grand Parade to the Bo-Kaap. Instead, the association proposes marching down the Fan Walk on Somerset Road and concluding at the DHL Stadium.

City spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo confirmed that the application is under review. Pending the finalisation of safety and logistical planning, the event is scheduled to take place in Green Point on Monday, January 5, 2026.
"The event will start at 11:00 AM, and the last troupe is expected to hit the parade corridor around 5:00 PM," Tyhalibongo stated. "Free public parking will be made available on P9 and P10 on Bill Peters Drive in Green Point."
RESPECTING THE HOLY MONTH
The primary driver behind this request is the shifting timing of the Islamic lunar calendar. KKKA Director Muneeb Gambeno explained that the application was made to accommodate the Holy Month of Ramadan.
"The Holy Month of Ramadan is increasingly moving towards the festive season," Gambeno said. "Previously when this happened, carnival stood still because, of course, there was a divide... Should carnival continue during Ramadan or not?"
By adjusting the venue and the schedule, the KKKA aims to ensure that the carnival remains a vibrant celebration that does not conflict with the religious observations of its participants and the community in the coming years.
