Manhunt underway after nine killed in Bekkersdal tavern shooting

Police have launched a manhunt for suspects who shot and killed nine people at a tavern in Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Ten others were injured when gunmen opened fire at the KwaNoxolo Tavern in the Tambo Section. According to preliminary reports, some of the victims were shot at randomly on the street near the establishment.

Police say at least 12 suspects, travelling in a white kombi and a silver sedan, carried out the attack.

Police spokesperson Brenda Muridili confirmed that the injured have been transported to various medical facilities for urgent treatment.

"The police have mobilised all the necessary resources, including Forensic Crime Scene Management and Crime Intelligence. The motive for the shooting will be determined by the investigation," said Muridili.
