Two teenagers are facing charges of animal cruelty after a horrific knife attack left a dog fighting for its life.

The owner returned to his home in Kirstenhof on the afternoon of 8 December to find a knife lodged in his dog’s nose.

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) inspectors, together with Kirstenhof Crime Watch, identified three teenage suspects with the help of CCTV surveillance.

Police confirmed two handed themselves over to police and are due to appear in court in January.

SPCA spokesperson Belinda Abrahams said the dog is still recovering.

“Animal cruelty is a serious crime because it speaks to values.  It reveals how power is used and how vulnerability is treated or mistreated. But it is our hope that confronting this conduct early that this will become a turning point, one that prevents future harm and redirects these young boys' lives."
