A five-and-a-half out of ten.

That's what Gauteng MEC for Infrastructure Development MEC Jacob Mamabolo is rating the province's current infrastructure.

Jacob Mamabolo recently tabled his department's latest annual report in the provincial legislature.

He says this past year shows a real turnaround, tighter governance, better delivery, and even a national award for a new system that tracks infrastructure projects in real time.

"We are on record as acknowledging the challenges, but at this point, we are seeing changes that are being brought about by the turnaround of the delivery of infrastructure."

Mamabolo says there has been an overall improvement of performance by service providers and contractors.

"Our infrastructure delivery process is in transition from a very complex, difficult period...but we are starting to see positive signs."

At the same time, Mamabolo says his department is not seeking to create the impression that "all is well and good".

But we are very much satisfied with the progress we are making, he says.
