The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape said the provincial Education Department's festive season school safety plan showed that it was serious about protecting schools and focusing resources on education, not repairs.
The department allocated more than R5.2 million to protect Western Cape schools over the holidays.
During last year's summer break, 47 incidents of burglary or vandalism were reported at 34 schools in the province.
Items damaged or stolen included electrical appliances, food for learners, bathroom fixtures, fencing, security equipment and windows.
"As the 2025 schooling year comes to an end this week, the DA in the Western Cape welcomes the WCED's R5.2 million investment to protect schools over the festive season. With more than 840 incidents of crime and over R5 million spent on repairs this year, this intervention is critical." Said the DA's Peter Johnson.
