Refuse collection in the City of Johannesburg has been impacted as waste management entity Pikitup transitions to new fleet service providers.

Residents are experiencing delays in refuse collection across all depots.

Pikitup communications manager Muzi Mkhwanazi explains that delays are due to the onboarding process, which involves familiarising the new providers with the routes and operations.

He confirms that the service providers were appointed a week before beginning operations on 1 December, 'an oversight from our side'.

“Some of the staff will be our own people, people who will be familiar with some of the routes, and some of these companies who have in the past assisted us with these kinds of services.”

Mkhwanazi says waste collection management is expected to resume effectively in the coming days.
