The Manenberg Community Policing Forum (CPF) has strongly condemned a shooting incident that occurred on Manenberg Avenue on Tuesday.
It's alleged a suspected gang member opened fire on Metro police officers while they were attempting to make an arrest.
At this stage, it remains unclear whether anyone was wounded during the exchange. Videos shared with EWN show residents running for cover as rapid gunshots ring out.
The footage also shows young people throwing stones at an officer who appeared to be in the process of apprehending a suspect.
Manenberg Community Police Forum public relations officer Abdurahman Govind, who arrived at the scene soon after the event, said as a CPF they are at their wits' end as residents ask for help, but retaliate when it arrives.
"The community has been crying out to us, get more resources... more boots on the ground."
But getting more boots on the ground won't solve the problem, says Govind.
"When the police comes in and do their job, then the community gets involved and that is the frustrating part of it."
Govind refers to a video doing the rounds on social media which he says shows a gangster, mid-arrest, asking the community to get involved.
"He asks the community to get involved and they start stoning the officers."
Govind says he watched as community members hampered SAPS' attempt to arrest the suspect.
"Then the gangsters started shooting... I mean really, where have you ever seen stuff like this happening?"
