Cabinet said it has succeeded to turn Eskom around from a struggling State-owned utility to a profitable one.
After more than a decade of load shedding and poor management, Eskom reported profits of over R24 billion in the first six months of the current financial year.
Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni revealed this while briefing the media in Pretoria, on Wednesday, on the outcomes of Cabinet’s final meeting of 2025.
As of September, Eskom reported a 37% increase in profit compared to the same period in 2024.
Government has credited this performance to its Eskom turnaround plan, which focuses on financial recovery, improving operational efficiency, and implementing structural reforms.
This marks the first time in eight years that Eskom has returned to profit.
Ntshavheni said that Eskom is also making significant progress in addressing the energy crisis.
“Eskom delivered consistent energy supply with only four days of load shedding. Electricity supply reliability stood at 96% in the 2024/25 financial year, improving to 98% year-to-date.”
While government insists that load shedding is a thing of the past, load reduction remains a significant challenge for many communities.
Load reduction occurs when municipalities cut power supply to densely populated areas in order to protect their overburdened electricity infrastructure.
