Gauteng's Roads and Transport Department is stepping up efforts to clear its long-standing operating licence backlog by handing over hundreds of licences at a ceremony in Johannesburg on Monday morning.
The department is hosting the operating licences handover ceremony at the Life Centre building and the Germiston Transport Operating Licensing Administrative Boards.
These licences are being awarded to taxi operators to help regulate and improve their services.
The department has issued a total of 525 operating licences since 1 September 2025, as part of its efforts to improve public transport services in Gauteng.
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, has urged operators to come forward and collect their operating licences.
"We have been having a backlog since 2009, as Gauteng roads and transport and the taxi industry in our province. We will continue to issue out these operating licences."
