The dilapidated Zithobeni Hostel in Bronkhorstspruit is being demolished on Monday, marking a significant step in the City of Pretoria's efforts to provide dignified housing to its residents.
Aaron Maluleka, Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Human Settlements in Pretoria, confirmed that all 87 families residing in the structure will be provided with alternate accommodation within the area.
Maluleka emphasised that this initiative is part of a broader plan to restore dignity to residents who were living in the uninhabitable building.
The MMC highlighted the historical context of such structures and the city's commitment to sustainable housing.
“Hostels in our history have been dormitories for migrant workers, but this morning we have allocated the services where the families are going to be resettled. We want to continue with our sustainable housing plans that would ensure that the families have dignity, but we also ensure that we cater for all the needs in our communities.”
Maluleka further stated that the project is part of a larger, longterm commitment to prioritising the well-being of local communities.
“These people have been residing in an uninhabitable area, which today they will have a jovial festive period and have a better life continuously,” he concluded.
