As wings of the African National Congress (ANC) look to quash reports of reported attempts within its national executive committee (NEC) to remove President Cyril Ramaphosa, the ANC in the Western Cape said this has not featured at all on its agenda as it prepares for next week’s national general council (NGC).

The ANC in the Western Cape said it’s focussed on problems affecting the province, and its declining electoral support.

Just two years since its elective conference, the newly reconfigured ANC in the Western Cape will head to the party’s NGC, with its paltry 19% support in the last elections top of mind.

ANC provincial spokesperson Sifiso Mtsweni said that although the party governs in coalition in several municipalities, it’ an undesirable position to be in, and a Government of National Unity (GNU) was a tactical move.

“I think one of the things we have to assess through the president’s report to the NGC is how far those positives have gone, and whether the positives outweigh the negatives.”

Mtsweni said that the party in the province also does not support alleged attempts to remove Ramaphosa, saying in any event, the NGC is not the appropriate platform for such a discussion.

“Where we are standing as the Western Cape, there’s no discussion to remove the president, there’s no discussion to remove anybody in the national executive committee.”

Mtsweni said for the province, the focus remains whether those entrusted to lead the organisation have met the mandate of the 2022 National Conference.
