The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) will submit a self-review application to court in an effort to tighten its appointment processes of National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) board members.

In a statement, Higher Education Minister Buti Manamela noted that there were certain procedural shortcomings in their appointment methods.

Earlier this year, some student bodies contested the appointments of the current board, citing that the former minister of higher education, Nobuhle Nkabane, failed to follow regulations as stipulated in the NSFAS Act.

Manamela said the self-review was part of his commitment to restore the public's trust and confidence in NSFAS.

The minister’s spokesperson Matshepo Seedat: "The board remains in place and will continue to fulfill its duties until such time as the court sets the decision aside. The functioning and structure of NSFAS will not be affected by this application and student servicing will continue without disruption."
