The National Freedom Party (NFP) has vowed to deal decisively with what it says are elements of factionalism within the organisation.

It says the elements seek to destroy the party, and its leadership says disciplinary action will be taken.

The party's National Executive Committee addressed the media in Durban on Saturday.

This briefing comes at the back of the party’s stance – withdrawing its support for the provincial coalition government, which includes the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA).

This decision was followed by contradictory statements made by the party's Mbali Shinga, who is also MEC for social development in the province.

Shinga told the media that despite the party’s stance, the GPU is working and that she continues to serve.

During the briefing on Saturday, party national treasurer Xolani Sibiya criticised those against the party's position.

“We hardly understand as to why some of our senior leaders whom the party deploys in strategic positions are even more than willing to denounce the party position in public – that on its own tells that there is something sinister about them.” Sibiya added.

He says the party is handling the matter internally and will communicate the outcomes.
