Madlanga Commission hears from Matlala about relation to Sibiya: 'He’s a criminal himself'

Accused tender tycoon Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala made startling claims to investigators that he gave suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya R300,000 as a wedding gift for his son.

A recording of Matlala confessing to investigators was played before the Madlanga Commission on Thursday. Matlala was recorded by "Witness C", one of the detectives who arrested him in May.

Excerpts of the more than four-hour-long recording were played before the commission.

Matlala allegedly attended the wedding of Sibiya's son. He reportedly arrived in a Rolls Royce and gifted Sibiya R300,000 in cash as a wedding contribution.

The recording captured Matlala stating: "But remember I withdrew about R500,000 and gave him (Sibiya) about R300,000 as a contribution for his son."

When questionedhow he knew Sibiya, Matlala responded with an explosive claim: "He’s a criminal himself, Sibiya."

According to the evidence leaders, a transcript of Matlala’s four-hour recorded conversation with investigators will be made public.

"Witness C" concluded his testimony and the commission is set to resume on Monday.
